Deadlines

I hate deadlines, but that's pretty much what I have to deal with every single day. Yesterday, I almost had a nervous breakdown because of some fire I had to put out at work. Anyways, I'm not going to start bitching about work again. It's boring, I rather talk about something else. Right? So, I just realized today is the deadline for the sewalong quilting project. Great! I'm not even done cutting all those quilt patties yet. Last night, I did some while watching survivors and there's still tons more to go. Let see, the bag need about 175 squares, I have about 24 done so far. Holly molly! 151 more to go. On top of that, I still have to trace, cut, sew...fun fun fun!

I finally make some headway on the fall knitting list. Here's my first choice - Moonshine from the latest RYC Classic Style. There's two more sweaters I want to make, however, let's talk about Moonshine a little bit cos I need some advice. Okay, if I use the original yarn the pattern call for, it's going to cost me a bomb. The sweater needs 17balls of the RYC silk wool for the smallest size, approximately $150. Well, it's still not so bad cos I know I probably have to pay lot more if I buy a sweater coat from the store. Anyways, here's my dilemma-- yarn substitution.

• First choice is KP Merino Style. It's cheap. I can knit this sweater for less than $60. But I never work with Merino Style. I'm afraid the sweater might peel after wearing it over time.

• Second choice is KP Andean Treasure. Cost a bit more but there are great colors to choose from. Same with Merino Style, I never work with this yarn before, so I have no idea how it's knitted up.

• Third choice is Rowanspun DK. One of my favorite yarn. One bag is more than enough for this sweater. The gauge for stockinette is right on but I have yet to find out whether it'll look good in moss stitch, especially with its tweedy effect.

So let me know what you think, or any suggestion at all. I'd love to hear them. I'm really looking forward to my weekend and hope you have a good one too!

I think the tweedy moss stich would be really pretty, but then again I love a tweedy anything, so I'm a bit biased. What about Brown Sheep Top of the Lamb? The gauge for sport weight is 24 st/4 in on size 5s. (I'm thinking of using it for the Gatsby Girl Pullover...another beautiful sweater using RYC...)

Vanessa, I love that jacket, but honestly,150$ for yarn..ouch!
KP- i wouldn't use it at all, it's really bad in wear/wash and pilling. I put my bet on Rowanspun DK.or Rowan Cashsoft DK.
Close ones are DB Cathay, Cotton Cashmere, Merino DK. There is Also Cherry tree hill, they have 50% 50% Silk Merino DK. may be they have solids?!

vanessa ... oh the dilemma ... how about rowan wool cotton ... shows double moss stich beautifully ... some colors are incredibly reasonably priced over @ jannette's rare yarns (ebay) ... and for california weather ... it's perfect ... the rowanspun dk might hide the pattern a bit and some of the dyelots/versions are less chunky than others ... i.e. some colors are less than dk and almost a sportweight ... and oh ... i saddled the snails today with the strap for the ruffle bag ... so we can pop the secret on the crowds!!! ... happy weekend ... happy knitting ... kisses ... ina and gumby ... the dog that tante sophie has ...

That jacket is gorgeous! And the quilt pieces look quite tiny, so take your time.

Rowanspun DK all the way! You can get it on eBay for a song, and I think it would be lovely in that pattern.

If you want bright colors and a yarn that's strong, Strikkegarn is amazing.

i'm a big fan of rowanspun series!! it's a lovely yarn! also the yardage is great so the sweater should be light. i love my blue cardi! it's made with rowanspun aran.

love the little quilt bubbles!! so cute.

do you recommend that jap. quilt book?

I love my Rowanspun sweater, so I'd recommend that--I think the tweed will look killer in moss stitch. I've had some bad experiences w/ pilling with the Knitpicks yarns...

vanessa ... the elsebeth lavold silky wool is fabulous as well ... a bit thinner in the feel of it but @ 5.5 stitches to the inch ... a great knit for an all around VERY useful jacket ... the colors are to die for and the price is nice as well for incredible yardage ... onward and upward ... ina and gumby ... the dog that tante sophie has ...

those squooshy little hexagons are already charming just like that. do the scissors match your fabric color scheme?

i made a little shrug with Andean Treasure last winter and really liked the yarn. it knits into a soft--almost silky--and warm fabric. pilling isn't bad; a little on the inside arms.

on the other hand, it's hard to imagine your regretting the Rowanspun. :)

I would go for Rowanspun too. And if you can find wool cotton at a reasonable price, it would be a good choice too.

Those little squares are so pretty!
Yeah I think I'd go for Rowanspun too. Merino style is nice, but I think the jacket would look extra gorgeous with tweedy look. Silky wool should be a good option too.

I vote for tweedy Rowanspun. The tweed effect should add to the design. As for the quilt pieces, take your time. I rushed on my squares and half of them were crooked! It was a pain to fix the problem at the sewing-together stage.

Have you considered Elsebeth Lavold Silky Wool? WEBS has it for $6.95/skein, discountable, 191 yds/skein, zillions of color choices....I love this yarn, although I don't know how it wears long-term.

I don't know about the Knit Picks yarns but I think that sweat/coat would look really great in a tweed! Of course, the only way to really know is to knit up a swatch in something tweedy to see if you like it. It looks like a really great project...I can't wait to see what you end up choosing!

I read a blog (cant remember whose) where the writer used KP Merino Style for a baby sweater and it really pilled a lot. She took photos and you could see the pills under the child's arms. Not sure about Andean treasure. I agree with the rest that the tweedy look would be great for that design. Also agree that WEBS has great selections and prices. good luck - let us know what you get!
